Hermanus
About Hermanus Blinds, a measure-and-fit service on Walker Bay
Hermanus Blinds measures, supplies and fits made-to-measure shading across the town and its own suburbs, with hardware chosen for how much salt air and wind each particular position takes. It is a local measure-and-fit service and nothing more complicated than that: a free in-home measure first, a written per-window quote after, and nothing stock or trimmed to fit.
Specified for a town that catches the wind from both directions
Hermanus sits on Walker Bay with the Kleinrivier mountains and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve directly behind it and the sea in front, a true cliff-top position rather than a bay tucked behind a mountain shoulder. That means the summer south-easter and the winter north-westerly fronts both arrive full-on, and few elevations are sheltered from both. It also means the best glass in most houses faces south across the water while the sun works the north wall, so the brief on the bay side is steady glare off open water rather than heat, and a cliff-top glass wall in Voelklip and a sash window in an Old Harbour cottage two streets apart can need entirely different hardware.
The range runs from interior products, including roller, day/night, venetian, cellular, vertical and panel, concealed, skylight and motorised blinds, to the external tier we lead with on exposed walls: external venetians, roller shutters and zip screens that hold sun, heat and glare outside the glass, with folding-arm awnings over the deck. Every exterior product gets a genuine wind rating, a wind sensor for automatic retraction, powder-coated aluminium and sealed cassettes as standard, because trade experience on this coast shows exterior fittings wearing out well before plastered walls do.
Hermanus and its own suburbs
The service runs from the cliff line to the ridge. Voelklip is the most directly exposed residential suburb, pressed between the mountain and the open sea, with architect-built glass walls that catch the bay's glare through most of the day and the full force of whichever wind is running. Eastcliff is tree-lined and settled, walkable to the centre and bordering the golf club, where one property can be leafy and dappled on one side and wide open at the golf-facing rear. Sandbaai sits in its own small bay at the mouth of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, with newer, larger contemporary glazing, raked rooflines and valley-mouth cross-winds on top of the prevailing pattern.
The Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge is gated wine-estate living above the valley's wine route, facing vineyard rows and mountains rather than ocean, with less direct salt than the coast but its own valley wind funnelling, harvest-season dust and an aesthetics-committee approval that comes before any exterior product is quoted. Each gets the same consultant, the same written-quote process and the same free measure.
What happens after you enquire
You enquire through the form or the chat on this site, telling us the rooms, the product interest and how exposed your glass or deck is to the wind. One of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to arrange a free in-home measure. That visit covers every opening with fabric and slat samples on the table, and the specification is argued out against your actual orientation, wind exposure, heritage or estate position, glazing style and room use, rather than a general rule for the town. The consultant walks how much sky and water each window sees, checks what is behind the plaster and how square the opening is, and finds the nearest usable power for any motor.
A written quote follows with a price against each window and each option, so nothing is bundled or verbal, and it confirms the lead time for your specific job. Once you approve it, everything is manufactured to those measurements and installed level and tested, with an operation demonstration before we leave, whether that is a chain with its tensioner, a remote, a wind sensor or a sun sensor on a bay-facing roller.
What this service will not claim
No price is guessed over the phone or off a photograph, and exterior work in particular is never priced before the facade, the fixings and the exposure have been seen. Roller shutters here control sun, heat and glare on the outside of the pane and carry no security rating; a security product is a different item on a different quote. A folding-arm awning is a shade product, not a rain product, and its wind rating is a real limit rather than a suggestion. No fabric removes glare and keeps a perfect view at the same time; every mesh is a compromise, and we say where on that scale each room sits.
Nothing on this site is a heritage-approval opinion, an engineering assessment or a wind-load calculation for your building. Those belong to Heritage Western Cape, your local authority, your estate committee and a suitably qualified professional. What we do is check your property against whichever applies at the measure and flag it before quoting, so nothing you order is refused at installation.
Getting in touch
The enquiry form and the on-site chat are the two ways to reach us, and both lead to the same place: a free in-home measure with no obligation, followed by a written per-window quote. Whatever you send through is used only to arrange that call-back and quote, is never shared beyond that, and is handled under POPIA. If you would rather read first, the free Hermanus window guide on this site works through the town's light wall by wall before you decide anything.
